i accidentaly exposed my digital camera lens (Sony DSC-H5) to direct sun rays for a second or 2 on the worst case.. ..
will this affect the quality and performance of the camera?

    The camera lens isnt an issue. Its the digital sensor of the camera you need to worry about. If there was damage done to the digital sensor you would be seeing it on photographs after the event; probably bright white or intense dark spots. This would be evident on that giant LCD screen the H5 has. I would like to ask you what you were doing point your camera at something at bright as the sun for an extended time? Hopefully not looking through it.

    It doesn’t hurt the lens at all. If the shutter opens while pointed at the sun, the image pick up device becomes toast in mere milliseconds.

    The lens itself is not a problem. If the sensor has been badly damaged, then you will already be seeing this on the viewing screen. Any damaged sensor pixels will not be working or playing up.
    However, I think that its probably unlikely. I have taken dozens of photos with the sun in them (sunsets, sunrises in particular) without any ill effect on the sensor of my Olympus.
