Asides from looking cool, it help shade the lens from sun glare (which will affect your image), and a little bit of protection if you bumped your lens. Don’t forget to get a UV or skylight filter for extra protection for your lens. The size would probably be 58mm. Look in front of the lens for a single number like 58mm or 56mm or whatever number that is not the 18-55mm, and that would be your lens size. Good luck!

Think of the times a hat’s brim or your hand keeps the sun out of your eyes. A lens hood does the same, preventing stray light from washing out what your camera can see.
As for the fit, you’d best get the original Nikon HB-33 hood, as it won’t cut of (vignette) the corners of the image when you’re at 18mm, and will is also reversable for storage on your lens.http://search.ebay.com/HB-33_W0QQcatrefZ…

It stops excess light coming in form all angles other than the one where the lens is pointing. It very good for getting rid of glare on the lens.
